There are many different forms of poetry some that rhyme and others that make you think deeply. Prose poetry is very unique because it is tries to almost defy the measure of what is poetic. Prose does not have a rhythm and, to some degree, follows or drives a narrative. The most unusual aspect of prose poetry us that it is not in verse form, as we are accustom to in poetry. While prose differs in how it is delivered from much poetic forms it often is rooted in symbols and figurative language as is common of most poems. In the selection of worksheets available below students will read and interpret different forms of prose poetry.

What Is Prose Poetry?


You might have come across a piece of writing that seems like a poem, but isn't. That could be a type of prose poetry. Prose poetry is a hybrid genre that contains both paragraphs and poetry. Prose poetry is a famous style of writing that includes lyrical words that convey certain emotions. Basically, the writer writes in prose, but uses poetic techniques.


To understand the concept of prose poetry, you must be aware of the terms prose and poetry separately. The prose is the typical form of writing that does not contain any poetic meter. Now, the poetic meter is the rhythm that is followed in the poems. You might have noticed such rhythms in poems of Shakespeare or different songs. These rhythms are based on the number of syllables in the sentence and rhyming words.


Prose poetry is a combination of both prose and poetry. The written structure of the prose poetry resembles with prose. However, it does have a poetic meter. It is written in paragraphs, but contains detailed imagery and repetition as well.


Here is an example of prose poetry written by Gary Young. It is called "I discovered a journal".


"I discovered a journal in the children's ward, and read, I'm a mother, my little boy has cancer. Further on, a girl has written, this is my nineteenth operation. She says, sometimes it's easier to write than to talk, and I'm so afraid. She's offered me a page in the book. My son is sleeping in the room next door. This afternoon, I held my whole weight to his body while a doctor drove needles deep into his leg. My son screamed, Daddy, they're hurting me, don't let them hurt me, make them stop. I want to write, how brave you are, but I need a little courage of my own, so I write, forgive me, I know I let them hurt you, please don't worry.
