Whenever we are trying to summarize or share a story with another person we need to focus the parts of the story in the correct order first. Make sure to start with the setting. People can quickly grasp what is going on if they know where it is set. Then you can move on to the characters. Give enough detail about each character so that when you present the events of the story it is easy to grasp the character's motivation. Retelling stories in the class is important to develop the reading, speaking, listening skills of children. However, it might be difficult to organize thoughts beforehand. Here are a few tips to organize your thoughts before retelling a story.


Use Notecards


Before retelling a story, it is essential to actually understand the story well. You should be able to comprehend the moral of the story along with the main theme and characters. Even after collecting every single detail from the story, one can find it difficult to remember and retell all of them. Notecards can be extremely helpful. You can write what you find difficult on the notecards and refer to them while retelling the story.


Use Visual Representation


This is a very useful way of organizing your thoughts before retelling a story. A good visual representation of the story and it's summary can help you remember things quickly. Create images in your mind of the story so that you can visualize it in your mind.


Revise in Mind


Once you are done with the reading, it is time to revise the story in your mind before you start to retell it. Repetition of something will make it stay in mind for long. So, highlight everything that you find important and revise it in your mind in the correct order.


Write Main Points


Writing the main points of the story would help you a lot in making sense of what you are doing. It will set a proper pattern in front of you to follow while retelling the story. It will also help you in remembering the story perfectly. Writing is the best way to organize thoughts.
