The History of the Written Word


Have you ever wondered when and why the writing system was introduced to the world? It might seem like a long time ago when the concept of reading and writing was developed. We have books and written pieces that date back to thousands of years before. However, the spoken language was developed tens of thousands of years ago.


For an extremely long period of time, spoken language was the only means of communication. No concept of writing or reading was recognized. People did not even know it could happen. Writing was developed thousands of years after people started speaking. It is believed that the concept of writing was developed around nine thousand years ago. This is what the evidence says. It might be possible that writing was developed before that, but we do not have any evidence to back up this statement.


The oldest pieces of writings were found in Sumeria. Sumeria is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. It is where people began settling and started agriculture. This was the time period when people were learning and inventing plenty of other things as well. Writing was also introduced during this time period in Sumeria. However, it was not anything like what it is today. They did not have proper pens and papers to write. Instead, people of the Sumeria invented their own unique ways of writing that progressed with time.


They first invented tokens that were stamped. Sumerians used clay to ensure the record of the land and grain. These clay documents had pictures stamped on them. With time, these pictographs changed into letters and words. This is how the first ever language was developed. It is known as cuneiform. After Sumeria, the practice of writing started in Egypt. They invented the "one sign, one sound" writing system. Languages started to develop all over the world after this.
