Reading at the second grade level concentrates on decoding words and building a level fluency. Decoding is when we break words into parts and separate the words into sounds. As our decoding skills improve we learn to read more accurately and quickly and establish a high level of fluency. As students grow, as readers, they will begin to read aloud with expressions that complement what they are reading. These worksheets will help readers become a bit more fluent.

Here are some tips for second graders to become better and fluent at reading.


Read Daily


One of the most important tips for young readers is to practice the habit of reading on a regular basis. This will help so much in future. Whatever you practice more, you become good at it. The only way to improve your reading skills is to practice reading every day. Take some time out of your routine to read books of your interest. If reading books is not your thing, then you can find other opportunities as well to read throughout the day. You can help in reading the grocery list or recipes. You can read the billboards while you are in the car. These small acts will help you in getting better at reading.


Join the Library


You can join your local library to get a wide variety of books. The library has tons of options to choose from. You can select what you absolutely love reading. You can get as many books as you like for no money at all. Another advantage of joining the library is that most libraries have reading hours and different activities for children. You can join that to get more exposure.


Make Reading Fun


Another great way to make reading a regular habit is to make it fun. If you are a teacher, you can encourage fun activities in the class so that your students become more interested in reading. Encourage enactment of the story so that the children read more carefully.


Read All Sorts of Books


Your reading will only become better if you will open up to all sort of genres. It will enhance your vocabulary and make you a fluent reader. Read books that you do not usually read to get out of your comfort zone.
