There are many times where will need to write about a personal experience that we either encountered firsthand or have some helpful inside information about. These pieces often start with a clear introduction that present the topic or concept of the experience. The main body then tells the story you are trying to share. Where students often get tripped up is the ending or conclusion. The best two methods to focus on when writing a conclusion is summarizing the main idea presented and reflecting upon the overall experience. These worksheets will help students compose well written narrative conclusion statements.

What is a Narrative Ending?


The narrative ending is the part where the author concludes the story. Here are some different types of narrative endings.


Surprise Ending


This is the ending that the readers did not expect at all. The story takes a new turn and surprises the readers. The surprise ending is where the author ends that story at a very unexpected note. These types of endings are often loved by readers.


Reflection Ending


The reflection ending happens when the author reflects back to the story. In this type of ending the author goes back to the main events of the story and redefines them with another perspective. Such endings leave the readers wondering and thinking about the story.


Question Ending


The question ending happens when the author leaves a question for the readers. The question ends is a great way of leaving a huge impact on the readers. This is because it allows the readers to think about the story even after it has ended.


Humor Ending


The humor ending happens when the author writes the ending in a humorous way. The humorous ending is funny and entertaining. It is a good way of making your readers laugh at the end of the story.


Circular Ending


The circular ending happens when the author goes back to the beginning of the story. The circular ending can happen in a lot of ways. It can bring back the settings of the beginning of the end of the story right where it started. The circle is maintained.


Moral Ending


The moral ending happens when the author uses the story to give some sort of lesson to the readers. Such endings give a meaningful message to the readers about life. Usually, it is advice for a better life. It can leave the readers in contemplation.


What are Reflective Narrative Conclusions?


A concluding paragraph is the most important part of any text due to a lot of reasons. Your conclusion should be drafted with such skills that the readers not only find it interesting but also is forced to reflect and think on whatever you have written. A reflective narrative conclusion, if written with great care, does this job well. A reflective narrative conclusion is such a conclusion that is written at the end of a narrative text but intrigues the readers to think on whatever has been written in the text from their point of view. This conclusion consists of statements that do not only restate the main idea of the narration but also invite the reader to think. Some of the ways to write a great reflective narrative conclusion are as follows:


End with a Question


A reflective narrative conclusion can be as short as a single statement or can be a paragraph of any length. Regardless of its length, ending a reflective narrative conclusion with a short but thought-provoking question can be a great idea. Ending a conclusion with a question can invite the readers to think and thus be a fruitful read.


Use Simple but Satisfying Language


Writing in a way that can satisfy others to agree with you through an argument is not an easy task. Thus, the choice of vocabulary made in this regard must be very careful. Use wording that is easily understandable but also convincing enough for the reader that he or she readily agrees with your point of view.


Avoid Taking Multiple Stances


Taking more than one stance in a conclusion deviates the readers from one path to another. Thus they cannot even reflect on the idea and the whole point of the text becomes void.
