Reflexive pronouns help writers add a personal touch to their work. These types of pronouns usually end in -self or -selves. They are used to reflect back upon another noun (or sometimes pronoun) that is already present in a written sentence. There are nine such pronouns in the English language. We use these parts of speech to signify to the reader that the subject is taken an action that is towards themselves or by them. These words can be used both in a literal and figurative context. They usually specify independent actions that were decided by the actor. The worksheets below will teach you how to identify these pronouns and how to articulate them in your own sentences.

What Are Reflexive Pronouns?


Reflexive pronouns are pronouns that are used in sentences when the subject and object of the sentence are the same. Reflexive pronouns end with "self" or "selves". There is a total of nine reflexive pronouns in the English language that include myself, yourself, himself, herself, oneself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, and themselves.


Myself


- She did not do my work so I'll do it myself.
- I will be conducting the meeting myself.
- I believe in myself.
- I will introduce myself.


Yourself


- Please, introduce yourself.
- That is an easy task, you can do it yourself.
- Do yourself a favor and quit the job.
- Did you hear it yourself?


Himself


- Does that mean he is going all by himself?
- He will do the assignment himself.
- He is doing all the PR work himself.
- He laughed to himself.


Herself


- She thought of herself as a coward.
- She made the apple pie herself.
- She dusted herself off as she got up from the ground after falling.
- The doctor herself was in pain.


Oneself


- It is selfish to think only about oneself.
- To love oneself is the most important thing to do.
- It is easy to deceive oneself.
- It is important to learn to express oneself.


Itself


- Did the desk move itself?
- The picture itself spoke a thousand words.
- History always repeats itself.
- The wound might heal itself.


Ourselves


- We will do our project ourselves without any external help.
- It was amazing to have the entire bungalow to ourselves.
- We introduced ourselves one by one in front of the history teacher.
- We consider ourselves extremely talented in this field.


Yourselves


- This is an assignment that all of you will have to do yourselves.
- Do not harm yourselves while you are out hiking.
- What have you gotten yourselves into?
- Be comfortable and make yourselves at home.


Themselves


- They turned on the heater to keep themselves warm.
- They heard it themselves.
- The kids themselves ate all the pizza.
- They went boating themselves without an expert.


Why Are These Parts of Speech Important?


You will commonly find these terms used in all forms of daily communication whether it be in a physical newspaper or a social media post. They are a crucial piece to providing a sense of meaning for the sentence. They are used to echo back onto the subject of the sentence. If there is any action or change of state occurring in a sentence, you can be sure that these parts of speech tell us who is undergoing this change.
