The concept of comparing and contrasting anything is often misunderstood. The term "compare" is usually the culprit. When we compare two or more things we are looking for the likenesses that exist between them. The opposite is true of contrasting. When we contrast things we are working to spot differences that exist between them. When students apply these skills to the details of a story it often can be confusing and lost on them. These worksheets can really help students grasp the details and make them have a lot of fun doing it.

Comparing and contrasting is the first step towards learning and reading comprehension skills. Compare and contrast tactics generally involve finding similarities and differences between the content of an essay or story to develop a student's cognitive skills. These techniques help strengthen decision-making skills.


In this article, we will learn about the compare and contrast techniques and how to utilize them for key details in a story.


Compare: Comparing refers to a tactic which is carried out between two things. In comparing, we try to find out or highlight the things that are similar in two things. The more two things are relatable, the more we have to compare.


Contrast: Contrasting is a tactic which refers to finding dissimilarities or differences between two or more things. It is the opposite of comparing.


How to Compare and Contrast Key Details of a Story?


Begin with comparing the key details in a story. We can take characters, settings, and events in which the story is developing or processing. You can also use a Venn diagram to compare the similarities between two characters, settings or events.


You can compare the key details in a story by simply two methods i.e. surface-level comparison or deep level comparison.


Surface Level Comparison includes easily visible factors like

- The two stories or characters deal with the same topic or physical appearance.

- Stating the obvious facts that two things, characters or settings looks similar.


The deep level comparison includes your analytical skills as well. You should look for factors like

- How two stories or characters have the same traits or theme?

- Explain how two things, stories, characters or events can serve the same purpose.


Moving on to Contrast, we may start finding the differences by digging more information from the story. It may include

- The development of ideas or arguments between the stories or events can be included in contrasting details.
- The length of the paragraphs or sentences can be included in contrasting details.
- The point of view expressed is either emotionally appealing or informative?
- The usage of emotions like humor, happiness, anger, appeal, irony, etc.
