There are going to be many times when you begin to write a story or essay and just can't find a word that does your thoughts justice. There are going to be times where you are reviewing your friend's or colleague's work and know that there is a stronger word that can be used. It's a great habit to group words within sentences when you are rereading anyone's work. In the series of exercises that these worksheets lay out students fill the sentences with the various choices of words that are presented.

Gap Filling Worksheets To Print:

Fill in the Gap – A little multiple choice for you now.

Complete Each Sentence – Each sentence is a bit longer than you would like, but it will help.

If | Unless – There is a lot more than just that. It also includes: so and because.

Fill in the Helping Verb – Helpers don't say it all, that's where the helpers come in.

+Fill in the Blank – These are some bigger words for you.

Fill-er Up! – Choose from the words provided to fill in the gap in each sentence.

Tales of Holes In A Story – Read the passage. Use the words provided to fill in the gaps.

Tips on Build a Strong Vocabulary


Have you ever met someone who has a solid handle on vocabulary and can seamlessly use words you literally have never heard before? It's impressive; it makes you want to know what they ate for breakfast. If you would like to heighten your vernacular, there are many approached you can take towards this. The most obvious being read works that challenge you. When you read often you run into words that you haven't seen previously. This allows you to learn something new.


About 4 years ago my husband bought me a word of the day calendar. To be perfectly honest, out of the 365 words in that deck I probably regularly use 10 of the words, that I hadn't previously. That is most likely because it wasn't something I was passionate about, but can see that it holds a great deal of value to learn the use of new words.


Another very helpful strategy towards learning new words is to keep a word journal. Write down new words you learn and review them weekly and monthly. This can be super helpful and it is fun way to keep a personal history that you can grow from.


Another pretty obvious, but fun and engaging method for learning new vocabulary is to complete regular crossword puzzles. You can find them in the newspaper, on the Internet, or you can even buy books filled with them.
