When students enter the first grade, the primary goal is not to just get them to enjoy the process of reading, but to help them understand what they are reading. There are many different methods to help students grasp the content of what they read. The more experience they have with being able to identify the important parts of a text, the more success they will have with understanding what they have read. These reading worksheets will begin students on the path to a greater level of understanding just that.

How to Help First Grader Readers with Comprehension?


Reading comprehension can be a great way to build the reading skills of first graders. Here are a few ways that you can help them with it:


Have Them Read Aloud


First graders can be a little shy when it comes to reading. This is because they do not have the pace and frequency to read as well as you. Encourage young readers to read the comprehensions out loud. This would help them in paying more attention to what they are reading. Reading the passage out loud would not only help them pay attention to the meaning, but they will also be listening to themselves. It would also allow the process of self-correcting mistakes and errors.


Reread for Better Frequency


Another way to develop good reading skills in first graders is to allow them to reread the same comprehension or passage for several times. This is to improve the reading frequency. They should be able to read at a certain speed. If they are struggling with words and reading, then make them reread again and again.


Talk About What You Are Reading


Comprehensions are not only about reading. They teach you a lot of things about the world. They are useful to get information and exposure to the surroundings. Whatever you are reading about, learn to talk about it. Encourage the child to mention all their previous knowledge on the subject. If it is something new for them, then allow them to express their opinions. This would help the children understand the comprehension better.


Ask Questions


Asking questions will make the child curious. He or she will be going back to the text to get the answers. Frequent questioning will allow them to pay more attention to comprehension.
