Punctuation rules are often a difficult convention for students to understand. This is mainly because they do not see the point to it. Why would I need the first letter of the sentence to be in uppercase letter form? Isn’t it the same thing? These are the questions I am constantly approached with as a teacher at the primary levels. When taught properly and consistently it can lead students to be strong writers. These worksheets will work students through the process of working with names and dates and focus them on the proper punctuation of each.

Capitalizing Dates and Names Worksheets To Print:

Identify Proper Nouns – Each kid is saying a word. Which word is a noun that should be capitalized?

Sporty Capitalization – Rewriting the sentences each with proper capital letters.

Catty Capitals – Identify the proper use of the capital letters.

Flowering Capitalization – Which flower pot contains a word that has the proper capital letters?

Capital Casey – You have your work cut out for you with this one.

Claire is Confused with Capitalization – Help Claire make corrections to her letter. Underline the words that need to be capitalized in Claire's letter.

Stepping into Capitalization – Draw a box around the shoes that are capitalized correctly.

Outer Space Capitalization – Rewrite the sentences by including the proper capitalization.

Fruity Capitalization – Place a "C" in the box by the words that need to be capitalized and a "NC" in the box by the words that do NOT need to be capitalized.

Capitalization Letters from Camp – Read the letter and underline the words in the letter that need to be capitalized.

Skippy the Sleep Walking Dog – Read the story. Circle the words in the story that need to be capitalized.

Hot Air Balloon Capitalization – Color the hot air balloons that contain words that need to be capitalized.

Colorful Capitalization – Read the sentences. Circle the words in the sentence that needs to be capitalized.

Wild about Capitalization – Circle the correctly capitalized word in each group.

Ice Cream Capitalization – : Read the sentences. If the sentence is correctly capitalized color the circle pink, if the sentence is not capitalized correctly color the circle purple.

How Do You Capitalize Names and Dates?


One of the primary rules of capitalization is to always capitalize the first letter of any proper noun. A proper noun is a specific person, place, or thing. As stated in the former sentence you need to make sure you are dealing with something specific. For example in the sentence: The boy likes to eat cookies. Nothing in that statement is specific. There can be countless numbers of boys and cookie types. These are examples of common nouns. Therefore they are not required to have a capital letter. If a specific boy or cookie type where present, that would change the rules of capitalization entirely. If we used the example sentence: Edward likes to cookies. As we can see whether or not “Edward” was the first word of the sentence, his name (the first letter) would need to be capitalized because “Edward” is a specific boy. If “cookies” were changed to a specific cookie type (say Oreos), we would need to capitalize that word as well.


Following along with this rule of capitalization are dates. When writing a date the name of the month is always capitalized. If you use a day of the week the first letter in that word is capitalized as well. Months and days always have their first letter as an upper case letter because they are proper nouns. Where students sometimes get confused is when they use the name of a season (winter, spring, summer, or fall). Seasons are not proper nouns, so they do have their first letter capitalized.
