We sort things almost daily without even realizing it. Do you have a drawer in your home for flatware (forks, spoons, knives)? You have a shelf in room for books? These are just a few examples. It is thought that the average adult undergoes some form of sorting every three minutes throughout their day. These worksheets will help students improve their ability to sort items.

Sort Words Worksheets To Print:

Farm Animals – If you find an animal, put them in the barn.

Fly, Swim, or Walk – You will find a whole bunch of living things. Tell us how they move.

Grouping Words – This is a really mix of skills. You do a three-way sort and then look for non-prompted activity.

Scavenger Hunt – We get a lot of compliments on this one. Hope you enjoy it!

Describe the Emotions – For each emotion below there are two words that describe it. Find these words in the word bank and write them beside the correct emotion.

Sorting Your Sense – Our senses tell us a lot about the world around us. Sort the words in the column in to the correct sense category.

Sort My Category – Using the words above, sort them in to categories and then label the categories.

A Simple Process for Sorting Words into Categories


Word sorting is a great activity to build a connection of young students with language. The word sorting activity involves the thinking ability of students. It can be used to make them understand the purpose of different words.


The word sorting activity involves a group of words that are given to young children. The words are jumbled up and they have no specific order. The order should be created by the children themselves. They have to sort all of the words into categories.


Looking at the number of words can get confusing and overwhelming at first for young children. It might seem like a difficult task for them. But it is a simple process that needs some basic understanding and they will be able to sort the words into categories in no time.


You can give students a table or cards full of different words. Now, they have to categorize these words. There are several different types of categories that can be used to sort the words. One such category could be the category of sound. Students can look at all the words present in the table carefully. Examine them and then take out the words that belong to the same spelling or sound pattern.


For example, if you give them a group of these words

sing, fat, trap, kite, ping, mat, flight, ring, time.

They can arrange it as
sing fat kite
ping trap flight
ring mat time


All words have been arranged into three groups according to the sound that they make.


This is only one category. Similarly, there are several categories that can help you sort words. For example, a category of plants will contain all the words that are associated with the term plants.
