This section looks at the different classifications of nouns. A noun, as we know, is a word that signifies a person, place, or thing. This type of noun is classified as a common noun. Proper nouns are words used signify specific people, places, things, and even ideas. Possessive nouns just signify that some is owned. These worksheets help students understand the use of each of these different types of nouns.

Types of Nouns Worksheets To Print:

What Are the Differences Between Common, Proper, and Possessive Nouns?


Common Nouns


Common nouns are probably the simplest form of nouns. They do not involve any complex structure so they are pretty easy to understand. Common nouns are simply words that are used to name common things, places, ideas, etc. They are not specified or actual names. Rather, they only depict a number of things under the same label. Common nouns are generic names. For example, if you use the word "dog", it would be a common noun. But if you use a more specific term like "German Shepherd", it would be counted as a proper noun.


You can find examples of common nouns in your everyday life. What do you see when you first open your eyes? your bed? the wall? the clock? All are common nouns. What do you see right after you walk out of your home? your car? plants? grass? All of these are also common nouns.


For Example:


Places: street, park, alley, city, country, etc.


Things: chair, hair, table, food, bed, etc.


People: sister, friend, teacher, accountant, lawyer, mother, man, woman, etc.


Proper Noun


Unlike common nouns, proper nouns are not generic names. In fact, proper nouns are specific names for particular things, places, or people. Proper nouns can be easily identified in a sentence. First, a proper noun is a unique name for something. Second, it always starts with a capital letter. Sometimes a proper noun can contain two words. In such cases, both words are capitalized.


For Example:


Places: Pacific Ocean, London, Grand Bazaar, Main Street, etc.


Things: The Bible, Titanic, etc.


People: Josh, Ashley, Mark, Susan, etc.


Possessive Nouns


Possessive nouns use grammatical constructions in a way to indicate possession. The ownership is shown by adding an "s" or an apostrophe at the end of the noun. Sometimes both are added.


For example:


Mango's taste


Susan's book


Yesterday's newspaper
