Most stories are composed to teach the reader a lesson that they can walk away with and try to assimilate to their lives. Each person has their own set of values (things that they feel are just and those that are wrong). These collective values help people form a moral compass. We often adapt these values to everyday lives and make decisions and choices based on them. These worksheets help students learn to identify a moral be portrayed by an author in a body of work.

Moral of the Story Worksheets:

The Bear and the Two Travelers – A classic with a slight tweak.

Sour Grapes – Don't think too much into this one.

The Wind and the Sun – What's the saying, "Kill them with kindness!"

The Wolf and the Crane – For "Game of Thrones" fans. A Lannister always pays their debts.

Lion and the Mouse – 10 friends will always come through. 10 enemies are just useless.

Steps to Determine the Moral of a Story


Almost all stories are told for morals. A moral is a piece of learning or general advice. You can follow these steps to determine the moral of a story.


Understand the Characters


Understanding the characters is a major step towards knowing the moral of a story. This is because the entire plot is based on their lives. We have to grab the learning from their personalities and actions. When you start to read a story, keep in mind to draw a rough character sketch to fully understand the character. Try to guess if the character is good or evil. Notice the pattern in the behavior of the character. It would give you an idea about the moral. You will get to know why something tragic happened to the character in the first place. Or what consequences one faces after taking certain actions.


Know How the Conflict Is Resolved


The conflict is an important part of the story. It decides whether or not the story was worth the read. Conflict is the part where the protagonist faces a tragedy. It is a complex situation that requires quick decision making. In order to know the moral of the story, pay immense focus on how the conflict is resolved. Conflict resolution is where the writer tells you about human nature and the world.


Make a Generalization


After understanding all the characters and conflict resolution, it is time to make a generalization. In most stories, the moral is written in the end by the writer himself. But if this is not the case, then you will have to make a generalization on your own. You can do so by collecting facts from the story. Focus on how the story ends. Who wins and who faces dire consequences? These questions will help you make an assumption about the moral.
