There are some words that many different people often misspell. Usually these words differ from the norm in the way that they sound and pair their consonants and vowels. Many times these words will contain a double letter pair and this confuses most people. These words often break what we consider to be grammar rules. Remember grammar rules, in most cases, are just generalities and don't apply to every word in the English language. These worksheets will help students work with words that they may be uncomfortable with.
Spelling Pattern Variations Worksheets:
Silent W – W is silent before r at the beginning of a word. Draw a line through the silent letters in each word.
Silent G – G and gh are often silent after long a and long i sounds.
Silent T – The letter t is silent before ch at the end of a word.
Silent Letters – Fill in the missing silent letters in each word below.
Missing Bubbles – Each word below is missing letters. Decide which letters are missing and write the word in the correct circle.
Fill in the Blank – Each word below is missing letters. Decide which letters are missing and write each word on the line.
Spell Check – Use ow, ou, or ew to fill in the blank in each word below. Write the word in the correct column.
Rock'n Rabbit – Choose a vowel pair to fill in the blank for each word below.
Word Families – Use the new first letter or letters in each box to complete a new word in each box, using the first word as a model. The first one has been done for you.
Silent Letters – Say the name of each picture. Find the word in the corresponding box below. Cross out the silent letter in each word.
Shhhh! – Read each word. Circle the silent letter in each word.
Examples of Unique Spelling Variations in the English Language
When you are teaching words to young children, you usually try to mention the ones that are easier to recognize. These words have similar spelling patterns. All you have to do is change a certain letter and then the meaning of the entire word is changed. For example, bat, hat, tap, cat, etc.
These words are easily memorized because their spellings are easy. They follow a similar pattern that can be recognized without any difficulty. However, as the child makes progress in learning such words, he or she should be brought to the next level. These are not the only words in the English language. The English language is comprised of many complex words with difficult spelling variations. There are words that will be used in your daily speech and text that would require some memorization. They do not have the same sequence of letters or syllables in them. Instead, these words consist of spellings that you won't see in other words. These words would also require your attention for correct pronunciation.
They might also be misspelled sometimes due to the complexity of the letters involved and unique pronunciations. Here are some examples of the unique spelling variations in the English language. It is best to memorize all of these words for future ease.
