Making sure that titles are properly capitalized can be confusing and leave you questioning yourself. There are several simple things you can do to insure that your titles are as they should appear. There are basically two rules that you need to abide by when looking at this. You need to make sure the first word of every title starts with a capital letter. You also need to make sure to capitalize all proper nouns in titles. These worksheets will have students working through a number of real active printables to hammer this skill down.

Capitalizing Titles Worksheets:

Book Worm – Rewrite the book titles properly.

Presidential – Lots of president related items to rewrite.

Super Hero – Which title works out?

Cookbook – Who knew there were so many cookbook titles.

Fairytales Capitalization – Which fairytale title is written correctly?

Judging Capitalization – The judge needs help making his verdict.

Capitalization Capitals – Cut and paste a stamp by the state capitals that are capitalized correctly.

Detective Books – Cut and paste a magnify glass by the book titles that are correctly capitalized. Place an "X" on the words that needs to be capitalized.

Bedtime Stories – Correct the book titles by circling the letters that need to be capitalized, cross out any capital letter that should not be capitalized, and rewrite the title correctly.

Everyday People can be Proper – Circle the correctly capitalized proper nouns.

Ninja Capitalization – Color the ninja star if the book title is not capitalized correctly. If the title is incorrect write it correctly on the line.

Rounding Up Capitalization – Read the sentences. Rewrite the book titles found in the sentence correctly.

Swimming with Book Titles – Mark the answer that is correctly capitalized.

Brand Name Capitalization – Write the following brand names correctly on the price tags. Cut and paste the price tag on the incorrect price tag.

Books about Horses – Underline the book title that is correctly capitalized.

How Should You Capitalize Titles?


Capitalization is the process of highlighting the most important words with the help of using a capital letter at the head of a word. It can also be used to differentiate the special quality words from the rest of the words. Therefore, while reading many Titles Cases of books, poems, stories, songs, essays, newspapers, and works of art, you may have observed capitalized titles.


Titles Capitalization Rules:


The title capitalization is carried out by these specific rules and applied in four styles while writing title cases.


- The first word should be capitalized in the title.
- The last word should be capitalized in the title.
- All the important words should be capitalized in the title.
- Important words include: adjectives, verbs, pronouns, nouns, adverbs and subordinating conjunctions (which are fewer than 5 letter word)

Whereas the words which should not be capitalized may include:
- Articles (an, a, the)
- Subordinating conjunctions (Shorter than 5 letters)
- Coordinating Conjunctions (and, but, for)
- Prepositions (by, at, from, etc.)


Title Capitalization Rules by Styles:


1. Chicago Manual Style: Chicago style is a broadly used writing style which is used to capitalize headlines in arts or journalism. The rules for Chicago writing style follows:

- Capitalizing first and last word
- Capitalizing all the important words
- Lowercase all the articles, coordinating conjunctions and prepositions.
- Lowercase the infinitives. (to, for, by)


2. APA style: APA writing style is crucially important for scholarly papers or academic papers. Here are the rules to capitalize on the APA style Title Case.

- Only capitalize the first word of main heading and subheadings.
- Capitalize all-important words and hyphenated words. (self-Independent, self-control)
- Capitalize all the words which have four letters or more.


3. MLA Style: MLA writing style is crucially important for scholarly papers or academic papers. Here are rules to capitalize on the MLA style Title Case.

- Only capitalize the first word of main heading and subheadings.
