There are words in the English language that are like duct tape, when you need them. They help hold a sentence together and the thoughts that come with them. Conjunctions are the words that keep phrases and clauses together. There are words that hold together phrases, sentence, and independent clauses these are called coordinating conjugates. If you are trying to hold together a dependent clause and an independent clause you would use a subordinating conjunction. These are called subordinating conjunctions.

What is the Coordinating and Subordinating Conjunction?


Conjunction refers to a group of words that help in connecting words, phrases, and sentences.


For Example: since, when, although, nor, or, and etc.


There are three types of conjunctions in which we will discuss coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.


Coordinating Conjunctions:


Coordinating conjunctions are a group of words that connect or join two clauses, words or phrases that share the same grammatical structure. These conjunctions are also known as connectors which join words + words, phrase + phrase, and clause + clause. Some of the coordinating conjunctions include –but, or, so, yet, for, nor, and.


Here are some examples to elaborate on how coordinating conjunctions connect two words, two phrases or two clauses in a single sentence when they share the same grammatical structure.
- We bought a book and a pencil. (Two words)
- We shall meet at my home or at my college. (Two phrases)
- She waited for her friend but her friend did not come. (Two clauses)


Subordinating Conjunctions


A subordinating conjunction refers to the word that joins a subordinate clause (dependent) to the main clause (Independent). Subordinating conjunctions are also known as subordinators that function to connect main clause + subordinate clause or subordinate clause + main clause. The subordinators may include these group of words whenever, because, if, since, till, where, after, while, provided that, even if, although, before, how, once, until, when, whether, no matter how, as soon as".


The main clause refers to the group of words which shows the literal meaning or makes complete sense. They have a proper subject and verb. Whereas, the subordinating clause depends on the main clause to express their meanings or make complete sense. Here are some examples to elaborate subordinate conjunctions.
- You will be successful in your life provided that you think positively
- I am ready to help you whenever you need my help.
