Pronouns are words that take the place of a regular noun. Adverbs are words that are used to describe something specifically adjectives, verbs and other adverbs. These words are used to spice up our language and make things a little more interesting. When we are gearing these word forms towards a specific individual we often will use relative forms of the word. These worksheets will help students get a good amount of practice with relative adverbs and pronouns. Students will learn how to identify them and use them in their own writing.

What Are Relative Pronouns and Adverbs?


Relative Pronoun


A relative pronoun is a word that introduces a noun descriptive clause to the sentence. A noun descriptive clause gives more information about the noun in the initial part of the sentence. The nouns being referred to can either be people, animals, places, things, or even ideas depending upon the role they are playing in the sentence. There are a very few relative pronouns in the English language including that, who, whom, which, whoever, whose, and a few others. These relative pronouns can either work as a possessive pronoun, object, or subject in the sentences.


Relative Adverb


A relative adverb is a word that introduces an adverb descriptive clause to the sentence. These adverbs can either work as a subject or object in the clause they are being used. Moreover, they also help in creating a link of their clause with the nouns and pronouns of other clauses in the same sentence. Most commonly used relative adverbs include where, when, why, etc.


Relative pronouns and adverbs provide essential details about the subject of the sentence. Here are uses of the most commonly used relative pronouns and adverbs.


Who


'Who' is a relative pronoun that is used in sentences when you are talking about a specific person. It is mostly used for people. This relative pronoun can be replaced by a subject in dependent clauses like she, her, they, etc. Here are some examples of this relative pronoun.

He is the boy who jumped from the cliff.
He was the janitor who needed help.
She is the woman who saved the dog.


Whom


This is another relative pronoun that is used to give further information about people. It is can also be replaced with the subject independent clauses. Here are some examples of the relative pronoun 'whom':

This is the man whom we need to praise.
He is the boy whom we should be thanking.


Whose


'Whose' is a relative pronoun that is used to show ownership or possession. It can be used for people, animals, or things. Here are some examples of the relative pronoun 'whose':

The boy whose book I borrowed came first in class.
She is the one whose legs were scratched by the bushes.
The man whose dog bit me came to apologize.


Which


'Which' is a relative pronoun or relative adverb that is used to add some extra information in the sentence. With the help of this relative pronoun or adverb, you can throw in some extra details about the subject. Usually, when you are using 'which' in a sentence, you set it off with the help of commas. Here are some examples of the relative pronoun or adverb 'which':

My kids went to a school which had no principal for a long time.
The flower, which had blooming petals, was plucked by the kid.
