Progressive Verb Tense Worksheets
Related ELA Standard: L.4.1.B
A verb tense let us know, within the verb itself, the timing of the action of the verb. If the action is taking place, it is the present tense. If the action already completed, it is the past tense. If the action has yet to happen, the verb would be placed in the future tense. There are sometimes where an action will be ongoing or in progress. For example, if a pie were to be baking in an oven. Ongoing or verbs in progress are referred to as the progressive tense. These worksheets will work on using the progressive tense with students.

What Is Progressive Verb Tense?
There are different types of verb tenses in the English language. The progressive verb tense is used when there is a continuation of the action.
Types of Progressive Tenses
The progressive tense can be divided into three types. These types include past progressive tense, present progressive tense, and future progressive tense. Here are some of ways with which you use these three types of progressive tenses in your daily speech.
Past Progressive Tense
The past progressive tense is used to indicate a time period of the past in which an action was being done. In order to form a sentence of the past progressive tense, you use the following formula.
Subject + were/was + present participle
For example,
I was playing.
She was walking on the road when the accident happened.
He was cooking the meal while listening to music.
They were wondering if you could help them.
Present Progressive Tense
The present progressive tense is the easiest type of progressive tense. This is because it indicates the action that is being done in the present. We use present progressive tenses to express actions that are still in progress. In order to form a sentence of the present progressive tense, you can use the following formula.
Subject + is/am/are + present participle
For example,
Chloe is playing a game.
Hannah is cooking dinner.
Josh is swimming in the lake.
The cat is jumping on the sofa.
The present progressive tense can also be used to indicate future events with the help of following formula.
Subject + are/am + going + infinitive
For example,
Ashley is going to give her an exam in the morning.
Future Progressive Tense
Future progressive tenses are used to indicate that an event or action will be happening in the future. The subject will be in progress of doing that thing. In order to form a future progressive tense, you can follow this formula.
Subject + will be + present participle
For example,
I will be finishing my degree next year.
She will be vacationing this summer.
