Spelling Tips for Fifth Graders

Memorizing the correct spellings of all the words and remembering them perfectly every time you spell those terms is almost impossible. As the curriculum and its load goes on to become harder than before with a student’s entry into fifth grade, the difficulty level of spellings also becomes difficult.

Teachers make sure to teach all the rules of spellings to the students, but they are not applicable to each and every word in the extensive vocabulary of the English language. This is because most of the English spellings deviate from those rules and have phonetic and phono tactic constraints that are spelled in unimaginable ways.

Here are a few tips for fifth graders who want to improve their spelling skills and learn new words with correct spellings alongside remembering the previous ones perfectly:

Read as Much Literature as You Can

This might sound like a useless idea with respect to the memorization of correct spellings, but it really works. Reading more and more books improves your vocabulary and helps you in memorizing it with the perfect spelling too. When you look at a new word in a book, try to memorize its spellings. Looking at the word itself helps in memorizing the spellings than simply hearing it. Over time, reading the same word numerous times in different books will store its spelling in your memory forever.

Break the Word into Syllables

While trying to memorize the spellings of a longer word, try to pronounce the word by breaking it into syllables and smaller parts. Memorize the spellings of the individual parts by spelling out loud. Eventually, you will memorize the word perfectly.

Write Repeatedly

Writing down the same word 10-20 times or even more can help you memorize the word’s spellings faster and for longer times.
