Common Forms of Writing for Fifth Graders

Teachers and language trainers in almost all the countries and regions of the world put special focus on developing the writing skills of students. These skills are taught in schools as a necessary part of the curriculum and a large portion of skills are tested in the form of tests. Hence, one's progress in school is dependent on these writing skills.

Fifth grade is commonly considered a critical period for a student's development in almost all the aspects of education. As soon as a child reaches fifth grade, teachers start teaching them 4 most common forms of writing and expect them to understand their differences and patterns completely.

There common forms of writing taught to 5th graders are as follows:

Expository

This is usually the first writing style introduced to young students because of its to-the-point and simpler nature. The definitions taught to students in almost all the subjects, instructions given to them, as well as the other basic and fixed forms of written statements all are aimed at sharpening their skills in this specific form of writing. Even though it sounds simple, expository writing sometimes causes a little issue for the students who are unaware of writing shorter texts without much details.

Narrative

Students are trained to write a story as a narrator who has experienced a situation. Students are also asked to write personal essays, experiences, and letters to their family or friends to sharpen their skills in this form.

Persuasive

In order to sharpen their argumentative skills, children are taught to write an opinionated text with filling in details that support their point and persuade others to agree to it.

Descriptive

Fifth graders are often provided with a topic to write in detail. All of this is meant to teach them the correct way of descriptive writing, forcing them to include every minor details in their written work.
