This is a speech or piece of literature that was crafted with the sole purpose of attacking or insulting a person or a thing with harsh language and a vicious tone. It often involves a significant of negative language and thoughts. Authors often use this in poetry and prose with the purpose of invoking overwhelming emotions in their audience. Roman poets were famous for using invective to attack public figures that they felt were not living up to their promises or duties. Although this is seemingly a negative tactic, this technique can be used by a group to rally against an opposing group or organization. These worksheets will help students explore this literary device and be able to identify it within literature.
