Long vowels are pronounced with same sounds as the letters they represent. Long E sounds can be spelled several different ways. The vowel team EE appears in words such as the words: green, peel, and speech. The vowel team EA double vowel combination can be found in the words: weak, seal, and beach. The long E sound can also be expressed through words that end in the letter y. The words: army, baby, and carry all give off the long E sound. The worksheets found in this section will help students master the sound given off by long E in words. This can be really helpful to help students learn how to sound out terms that they are not familiar with. This is a natural progression after mastering sight word lists.

Long E Worksheets To Print:

Take It From The Bank-ee - What rhymes with mean, eat, and leak? Read the words from the word box. Find the sets of words that rhyme with the bolded word and write them on the lines.

When E Says Its Name - These are super tricky, unless you say them aloud. Say the name of each picture out loud. Does the word contain the ĕ sound or the ē sound? Circle each word and picture that makes the long e sound.

Long E Word List - The word bank box is your best friend here. Read the words from the word box. Find the sets of words that rhyme with the bolded word and write them on the lines.

Can You Hear the Long E? - You might need to say these to yourself several times. Find the word in each set that makes the sound we are looking for.

Longer - Remember to write the complete word out. Circle the word in each pair that has the long E sound. Write that word on the line.

Picture This! - Circle that picture up. Say the name of each picture out loud. If it has the long E sound, circle the picture.

Long E - Number five refers to what the girl should be doing. Look at each picture. Say the name of each picture out loud. Write the long E word on the line.

Long Fish, Short Fish - You decide on a tall or small tail for this one. Read each word. If it has a one sound, color the big fish. If it has a short E sound, color the short fish.

How to Spot Long E Words


The long E sound can hide in plain sight within words we don’t readily recognize, until we sound them out. When you are scouting for this sound you often will need to say the words to yourself aloud. The most common long E words have the vowel team of ee. You will find this in common words such as cheek. If you spot this combination, they are often a dead giveaway.


The long E sound often is camouflaged in words that contain a split ee pair. Consonants often separate the vowel pair. You will find this occurrence apparent in words like athlete and here. Most of these words are in situations where more than one syllable resides. Another rare instance is with words that contain the ie vowel pair.
