Long vowels are pronounced within words the same exact way you would pronounce the letter by themselves. Of all the long vowels, I is found in the fewest number of words. They are very infrequently used because of the distinct sounds given off by the long vowel sound. What I find so interesting with the long vowel I is that this sound is given off in words much more often by words that end in the letter y. Such as found in words: sky, defy, and supply. Fun fact, the dot found above the line in a lower case “i” is called a title.

The Sound – What rhymes with white, sign, and dime? Read the words from the word box. Find the sets of words that rhyme with the bolded word and write them on the lines.

When I Says Its Name – These are super tricky, unless you say them aloud. Say the name of each picture out loud. Does the word contain the ī sound or the ĭ sound? Circle each word and picture that makes the ī sound.

Long I Words – If students take the time to sound out the words, it will take at least 10 minutes.

Can You Hear the Long I? – The word box is just a guide. For extra credit, make up your own words.

This or That? – Circle the word in each pair that has the long I sound. Write that word on the line.

The Sounds Long I Give Off


The long vowel I sound can be given off in a variety ways. The most common long vowel I sound comes off of words that have the letter "i"- a consonant – followed by the letter "e". This is often described as the i-e letter group. You will find this in the words: life, bike, wise, and drive. You will also find words that have an ie vowel combination group give off a long vowel I sound. Note that these words do not have a consonant separating them. These words include dried, fries, and pie.


An interesting letter group that also gives off the long I sound is the "igh" letter group. The "gh" portion of this letter combination is silent. You can see this in the words: flight, delight, and knight. The most interesting long vowel I sound comes from words ending in the letter "y" and you sometimes find the letter “y” in the middle of the word. This sound can be heard in the words: July, apply, and multiply.
