The first of Doctor Dolch's word sight word lists is the Pre-primer list of words. It is a list of forty sight words that target beginning readers and are best learned with a flashcard sort of method. I have worked with students at this level for over a decade and I and my colleagues often find this to be the most effective mode of learning for this particular piece. More than half of these words will be the frequently used terms that students will use up to and including second grade. Who are we kidding, they will be using most of these terms daily for the rest of their lives? This is the jump off point for most inspiring English Language learners. This is a collection of worksheets that explore and help you build confidence with Dolch Pre-primer sight words.

Dolch Preprimer Sight Words
A renowned child language acquisition expert, Edward William Dolch, in the 20th century compiled a list of words he named as the pre-primer sight words. According to Dolch, these terms are those that a child should learn in his or her early years of life. This memorization helps a child in recognizing these frequently-occurring terms easily and this will make them a fast reader. Before the development of this list by Dolch, there was a list of 500 words a child had to learn. However, Dolch recognized the impracticality of teaching 500 words to a child and reduced the list to contain only 220 in total. These 220 words are further categorized into different types as given below:
Categories of Dolch Sight Words
Dolch has categorized his list of sight terms into 5 different categories depending upon the difficulty of the word and the extent of their usage in everyday life. The easiest in this list are known as Dolch pre-primer sight words. These words must be the first ones to be taught to a child since they are easier to learn and are used by a child in his or her entire life. Most of these terms are either prepositions, determiners, or pronouns and consist of no more than two to three letters. Teachers and parents must ensure that a child knows these words completely so that he or she can develop a stronger grip on English language in academic life.
