It is particularly important to be able to use singular pronouns correctly in sentence because they are bread that holds the sandwich together. They really dictate or drive the agreement between the subject and verb of the sentence. Pronouns allow our language to feel more bountiful and they help the sentences offer a great deal of diversity. In the end, they are the reason that written language is so interesting to so many people. If we lacked them our written work would sound robotic. These worksheets will have students use and analyze the use of singular pronouns in many different forms of sentences.

Multiple Choice Quiz - You will need to see which descriptor fits best. The goal is to replace the noun (in bold) in each sentence.

What Are Singular Pronouns?


Pronouns are used to represent a noun. Similarly, singular pronouns are used to represent a single person, place or a singular thing. Students need to know what a singular pronoun is and where is it used. They are commonly used to take place of a noun, avoid repetition, and to simplify the sentences. There are different types of them and they are discussed in detail below:


Subjective Forms

Subjective terms are used to take place or refer to the subject in the sentence. Commonly used forms of these words are: he, I, it, she, they, we, and you. In the sentence "Lucy is an adorable cat, she knows a lot of tricks" subjective pronoun 'she' is used to refer to Lucy which is the subject of the sentence.


Objective Forms

Singular objective pronouns are used to take the place of an object in the sentence. Commonly used forms of these words include: he, him, it, me, them, us, and you. For example, in the sentence "Kate gave me her book", the word 'me' is an objective pronoun used instead of an object in the sentence.


Interrogative Forms

Singular pronouns are used to interrogate or to ask questions about the subject. Here are a few of the words that you might be familiar with that serve this purpose: which, who, what, whom, and why. For example, the sentence "who took my book?" is using an interrogative singular pronoun to ask a question about the subject.


Possessive Forms

Possessive singular pronouns are used to show possession or an ownership of a single person, an idea or any other thing. You will definitely recognize a number of these words including: yours, hers, mine, ours, theirs, etc. The sentence "your cat is as adorable as mine" is using a possessive singular pronoun 'mine'.


Demonstrative Forms

Pronouns can be used to demonstrate, emphasize or define something are known as a demonstratives. You will often find that these words lend themselves to the singular form (this or that) and are often found in plural words such as: these and those.
