Soft C Worksheets

Core Standard
Answer Keys Here

Just like the letter g, the letter c is one of those parts of the English alphabet that make the language a little more difficult to comprehend and become fluent in. That is because it can be commonly pronounced within a word in two different ways. It is almost a stand in letter for the sounds of /k/ and /s/. Not only does that complicate things, but it also can be vocalized slightly differently based on the placement it resides within a word. If you have a word that contains the letter c directly followed by e, i, or y it produces the soft sound that says /s/. As you work through all the new words that you come across, understanding how to recognize the soft c with help you learn how to easily bring a new word to speech for yourself. This will help you become a more fluent reader and speller when it comes to writing. This collection of awesome worksheets will help you learn to hone your skills on recognizing this and make short work of new words that you come across.

Soft C Word List

Understanding how to identify and say word that include this form of the letter usually appear around mid-way between most phonics programs. This is because students first have to master the concept of affixes and root word words in addition to patterned consonant and vowel blends. We have to remember as teachers that this is not the easiest concept and needs a good deal of framing to make it sink in. I have seen many teachers introduce this early on with the expectation of student difficulty, but a focus on remediation and have a good deal of success.

One of the best ways to start with this unit is to focus on words where the silent (e) concentrates the long vowel sound. Those particular set of words create a double-sided function for the silent (e). They create the long vowel sound and they also mark the soft (c). Once they feel comfortable with that, move on to words that add a prefix, a suffix, or both.
