Soft G Worksheets

Core Standard
Answer Keys Here

The letter g somewhat complicates the entire English language to a good extent. It gives off two vastly different sounds based on where it lies within the composure of a word. If it is found within a word and it is followed by the letter i, e, or y it makes what we refer to as a soft sound which comes out of the mouth like a /j/. As students learn to recognize this arrangement of letters it will help them learn how to bring the written word to speech with the proper pronunciation. This will help them become more fluent readers and spellers. This is the simple process that will help them become more comfortable with language in general. Your better readers learn this level of sound distinction pretty quickly and apply it to their own reading. In this section of our website, we will explore this sound and how to recognize it quickly and accurately in words that are completely new to them. This will help elevate their automatic vocabulary.

Soft G Word List Example

We start this off by saying that the letter (g) is one of the biggest misfits of the language. That because the soft g rule teaches us to look for the letters i, e, or y to trail it. There are exceptions to this rule such as in the words (get) and (begin). This creates somewhat of a phonetical chasm. Teachers often sweep words like these under the rug by teaching those words as sight words. That is a set of words that students learn to automatically recognize by sight. As new words appear in modern language this leaves us with a bit of a conundrum. This reminds me of the recent word (gif). This a computer graphics format that is often used on web page or in word processors. Everyone pronounces it slightly differently because they forget this rule, or they may think it is an exception to the rule. The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations, but the New York Times says it follows the soft g rule. See how this simple letter confuses things?

Here is a list of words that exhibit the soft g behavior:

age, agent, angel, badge, bridge, budget, cage, danger, dodge, emergency, energy, energy, engage, fledge, gel, gem, gene, generate, gentle, germ, giant, giraffe, gym, huge, huge, ingest, judge, knowledge, legend, nudge, orange, page, stage, urgent, wage, wage
