Traditionally the K-12 academic calendar is 10-months long. Where these 10 months fall on the calendar greatly differ across the world. After having taught for over 25 years I can clearly tell you the most difficult times of the year are the start of the year and the completion. The last 6 weeks are truly difficult because the better half of the student body already thinks the year is over and the attention to detail falls off a great deal. As teachers when our student's level of motivation falls it requires that we step up our game and become motivational coaches just as much as solid educators. How to Prepare for the End of the School Year?


The end of a school year is one of the most hectic times for teachers and students alike. While the pressure of the finals can be too much for young knowledge-seekers, educators also have their work cut out as the academic year reaches its conclusion.


If you're a teacher, you're probably already working overtime to get everything wrapped up as per schedule. The days seem to be flying by and, before you know it, the last day of the school year will be here.

Gather Evidence of Your Students' Learning

Students' test scores, assignment grades, and progress reports are documents you already have. Start by sorting through them. It will give you a refresher on where each student in your class currently stands.

Armed with this information, you can now formulate a plan to help them out during the last few weeks of the year. In addition, some other learning assessment methods are listed below.


Carry out different activities (learning-based games, capacity-building exercises, etc.) in class and then record their decision-making at various points during that activity.
Implement a testing schedule with time dedicated to sitting one-on-one with each kid and discussing how to overcome their weaknesses.

 

Personalize Student Learning

This can include dedicated year-end reflection sessions for each student. You can also divide them into small groups of 4 or 5 or 6. These can be informal discussions or you can ask every child to write down their thoughts on the academic year just gone by.

Reflection is essential to lifelong learning. It also helps consolidate what you've learned and process your feelings. For instance, if the focus during your classes throughout the year has been on building students' ICT (Information & Communication Technology) capability, these reflection meetings can help them solidify those learnings. Compile Meaningful Progress Reports for Parents

Parents expect their children to be taught how to use the latest technologies as part of the school curriculum in this digital age. Discussing your students' progress with their mom and dad, especially regarding ICT capacity-building, will help.


To that end, you're recommended to prepare detailed progress reports. This will help the parents know EXACTLY where their kid stands academically. Try not to use fancy teaching vocabulary and technical jargon because that can confuse the layman.


Instead, explain things in simple and accessible ways so parents can understand what's going on straight away. You can also include tips that the parents/guardians can implement at home to help their little one(s) improve in the classroom.
