Once a youngster has mastered the alphabet and start to understand the basic sounds that the letters of the alphabet make, they are classified as an emergent reader. These students are now ready to be exposed to full blown complete sentences and time to break open the picture books. Students at this level could really use a high level of support of pictures to help them comprehend. These worksheets are leveled for these students and help them elevate their reading level.

Back to School - This is actually a critical thinking skill activity for this level. Read each sentence. Color the matching picture.

Read the Story - At first glance, this looks easy. Read very carefully. Read the story. Answer the questions.

Farm Poem - Time to start interpreting poems and their meaning. This is a 9 line poem about the life on a farm.

Tim the Teacher - This is about how advanced it gets for this level. I would explain to students what the quotes mean, as well as the commas.

Missing Rabbit Hole - Fill in the missing words. There is a bank of words that you can use to get it done.

Sea Story - Three little mermaids were best friends. They laughed and played, and the sea was calm.

A Winter Poem - Snowflake, snowflake... One hour old... What is the poem about? See if you can understand what is going on here.

The Wizard of Izard - The wizard of Izard... Cast a spell... What it would do... No one could tell.

Pumpkin - Pumpkin, pumpkin... Up on a wall... What is the speaker in the poem worried about?

Crazy Cows - Read each set of sentences. Which one describes the picture? Write its letter on the line.

Ellie's Game - Smack! The ball went up into the sky. Ellie ran back. She watched the ball. What makes the "smack" sound and why?

Used Twice - Read the story. Cut and glue to fill in the missing words. Write in the words that are used twice.

Doggie Wants A Bone - Read each sentence. Cut out each story tile and glue them into the right order.

At the Pet Store - Read the story. Circle the word in each sentence that matches the picture.

Sid - Meet Sid. Sid is scary. Sid has four eyes. Sid has six legs. Guess what Sid is. The picture kind of gives it away a bit.

What Are Emergent Readers?

Basically, emergent readers are those children who are just starting to comprehend the basic concepts of books and text. These kids are on the cusp of understanding how to command the alphabet. They are also likely to grasp and identify upper and lower case letters at this stage.


In addition, children in this age bracket also develop several phonological awareness ideas. Examples include being able to differentiate between phonemes, syllables, rhymes and the like. Emergent readers who are at nascent stage of development start to understand the link between sounds and symbols.


This means they begin with the usual consonants and vowels. With the passage of time, they can read consonants, vowels followed by another consonant. This is commonly referred to as CVC words.


At the first stage of development, emergent readers peruse books which have multiple colorful illustrations, repetition in terms of patterns, large recognizable printing, greater spacing and minimal text on an average page.


In the next phase of their learning process, emergent readers develop a better understanding of the alphabet and early phonics as well. They also have a greater grasp of the concept of high frequency words at this stage.


This is followed by having awareness of comprehension skills. Children can identify many types of texts. In particular, they can understand fiction and nonfiction, and start to understand their purpose.


Furthermore, the next stage involves the reading becoming more convenient and comprehension is ameliorated as well. In fact, some children are even able to read the text contained without depending on others. These readers can comprehend different styles and genres too.


By the time children become fluent, they are at a stage where they are actively reading to learn more ideas and concepts as opposed to it being vice versa. When they read, they exhibit signs of expression and freedom with proper pauses also.
