When we are reading fiction you often read works where a story is being told by a person. This person is called the narrator and they can be a part of the story themselves (first person) or be telling the story from the outside as a casual observer (third person). Some fundamental works of classic literature have used a narrator to great acclaim. Huck Finn and The Catcher in the Rye are two classic works that featured a narrator. These worksheets will help students discern the role and contributions of narrators in a written work.

What Influence Does a Narrator Have on his Work?


In the written texts, a narrator is usually an authors' tool to tell the story to the readers. The narrator is a character inside the story from whose perspective everything is being told to the readers or can be the author himself. No matter what form a narrator takes in a story, his role always holds prime value in a story.


The narrator makes readers understand the story and read between the lines. The readers' anticipation and response towards a work is always dependent upon the narrator and its influence on that particular work. There are different types of narrators and all these influence the work in different ways:


Influence of A First Person Narrator On the Work


A first person narrator is usually a character of the story who narrates everything happening in his own life as well as of others. Work with such a narrator is usually very easy to understand and goes smoothly from one person or event to another. Moreover, such a form of narration makes it almost impossible for the book to have any confusion since everything is being told to the reader from a single perspective. However, readers find it hard to trust the work where there is a single narrator and always crave for another narrator's opinion to look at the story from another perspective.


Influence of More Than One Narrators On the Work


Work with more than one narrator is very diverse and trusted more by readers since they tell everything from the point of view. More than one narrator defines work from more than one perspectives and decreases the chances of doubts from the readers.
