What Is Transitional Writing?


Transitional writing is a particular style of writing used by the writer to move from one idea to another within a paragraph; it also guides the reader the way to move from one paragraph to another. Transitional writing can be achieved by writers by using transitions in the form of phrases and words. In addition to linking a paragraph or an idea with another one, transitional phrases or words can also be used to compare, contrast, and emphasize an idea.


Given below are some functions in writing that can be accomplished by using the transitional form of writing:


Comparing


One of the most significant functions of transitional writing is to compare two or more ideas. Transitional words like however, nevertheless, nonetheless, contrary and transitional phrases like in contrast, on the other hand, etc. can be used for comparison between ideas.


Adding


Transitional words or phrases between paragraphs help to add new information about the content. Transitions like in addition to, additionally, so, moreover, furthermore help to introduce new ideas related to the topic of writing.


Emphasizing


Transitional writing can be used to emphasize the important and interesting ideas within the content. Some important transitional phrases or words used to emphasize an idea include most importantly, Indeed, in fact, even though, notice that, and many more.


Conditioning


Some transitions are used in case of a specific condition or a situation. For the purpose of, in that condition, unless, in light of, only if, etc. are some transitions indicating conditions.


Sequencing


When ideas are listed one after another, transitions can be used to sequence them in an order. Firstly, secondly, before, first of all, next, etc. are some of the commonly used words for this function.
