The most common consonants found in words of the English language are d, g, m, p, n, s, and t. If you ever get a shot to be a contestant on The Wheel of Fortune, this is very good to know. These constants also appear frequently in fifty percent of other world languages. They are considered the primary constants due to their ridiculous level of frequency. These worksheets will help students better understand their usage and the associated sounds that they make.

Consonant Sounds Worksheets To Print:

First Sounds – Say each word. What sound does it start with? Fill in the correct letter from the box.

Ending Sounds – Name each picture. Write the ending sound.

Frogs – Fill in the first letter of each word. Use the color code to color the frogs.

Ending Sounds 2 – Say the name of each picture. Circle each picture that ends with the sounds in the box.

Cut and Glue – What beginning sound do the pictures in each row share? Cut out the right letter and glue it into the box.

Secret Words – Write the first letter of each word on the line below the picture. What new word do they spell? Write the secret word on the line at the bottom of the box.

Consonants – What is the first sound that you hear? Find the letter that makes that sound and glue it into the box beside the picture.

Missing Letter – Say each picture out loud. Then find the missing letter and circle it.

Daydreaming – Glue to match the ending sounds.

Letter Boxes – Color the box of every letter that you hear when you say the picture.

Adventure in Space – Write the beginning sound of each picture in the top of the rocket. The first one has been done for you.

First Sounds – Write in the missing letters.

Cut. Sort. Glue. – Say each picture out loud. Paste the picture into the box that contains the correct first sound.

Ending Sounds – Circle every picture in each row that ends with the sound in the box.

What Are Primary Consonant Sounds?

Speech sounds that are made by completely or partially obstructing the breath inside your vocal tract are called consonants sounds. In the English language, consonant sounds are made by all those letters that are not vowels. There are a total of 21 consonants in English. Here is a complete list of the consonants in ABC.


B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, and Z.


Y is only sometimes considered a consonant because it is often used as a vowel too. The sound that is produced by saying these letters are called the primary consonant sounds. These consonants sometimes also help in making syllables by joining with vowels. However, syllables are not completely dependent on consonants.


The primary consonant sounds have a very vital role to play in building the language skills of young children. This helps in making the child understand the speech clearly and then speak clearly. Primary consonant sounds work as building blocks for children when it comes to understanding the language. Primary consonant sounds are also much easier to learn and fathom than vowels. Vowels are most pronounced in different ways. Whereas, the primary consonant sounds are all pronounced in one way only. They are only to be learned once and then can fit any word accurately.


There are a lot of fun ways through which you can teach primary consonant sounds to young children. You can start by teaching the basic sounds of each consonant. You can teach children how to position their lips and tongue to say a consonant. Make them memorize it by constant revision.
