When students begin to read teachers often attempt to pique their interest by reading only works that will engage their students. At some point we must move from works of pleasure to works built around information gathering and transferring some form of knowledge. Most students are not interested in non-fiction or works that have a unique purpose that are outside of their own personal interest. These worksheets attempt to help students build on their ability to grasp and retain information from nonfiction-based works. The best way to do this is to identify things that you already understand and build off of that platform.

Helping Students to Read For Purpose

In early years, reading means directly teaching children words and sounds. Children should be able to distinguish between different sounds, written alphabets and concepts of print to be able to develop comprehension skills. Anyone can learn to read, but to read for purpose and to decode and infer relevant information from the text is not a piece of cake. Children need sound understanding of the text along with language literacy to be able to read for purpose.


To instill the habit of reading for purpose, the teacher should start off with a starter activity linking it to their interest in the upcoming passage. She can talk about animations and art work related to the passage to build their interest.


If the children are learning about, for example the solar system, the teacher can stimulate their prior knowledge about it by talking about earth and the sun, moon and the stars leading to a bigger picture of the solar system. In this way students will establish a purpose to read and will know what to expect from the text.


As kindergarteners are not grownups, they will need supervised reading sessions. The teacher can explain the meaning of various words as used in the text. She can ask frequent questions to ensure the children are on track and can focus on the passages where students will need to make inferences.


After reading, the teacher may prompt students to recall and discuss in their own words the important parts of the text. The teacher may give the students a chance to respond to their understanding of the text in different ways for example, through writing, theatre, music, videos or debates. Lastly, the teacher can extend her understanding of the text to real life situations.
