Main times people will ask what an article we read, or paper was about. Often, they are just looking to understand the central theme and the key points. When retelling any information, I would always focus on just putting together an orally outline for your audience. The best way to know that you are properly retelling anything is to focus on why the body of work was composed in the first place. What were the original intentions of the author? This series of worksheets has students listen to their teachers read them a passage and they are then asked to retell the story.

How To Help Students Learn To Retell Stories

One of the best ways to develop excellent reading skills in young children is by making them retell stories. Kindergarteners are usually fond of listening to stories, but making them retell the stories would increase their brain function and add to their critical reading skills. Retelling stories would also increase their vocabulary. They will learn how to summarize and comprehend a passage or story. You can use certain activities and strategies to make young readers excellent at retelling stories.


One such strategy is to use sticky notes to help them differentiate between events and characters. When kindergarteners first start retelling stories, they face an issue of differentiating between the different parts of the story. For example, they mix up the events of that happened in the beginning. They cannot really tell the difference between the starting, middle and end of the story. The child must first completely understand the story in order to retell it. For this, you can use sticky notes. You can ask the children to rewrite the starting, middle and ending of the story as they read it. This would make it easier for them to orally narrate and retell the story.


Some children do not have excellent memorizing skills. They are still working to develop a good memory. In such cases, the child can't remember clearly what happened in the story. This affects the retelling of the story. To solve this issue, you can divide the storybook into sections for the child. You can divide the story into the beginning, middle and end. The child can immediately retell the story whenever he completes one section. This would make it easier for him to remember the story.
