Phonemes are singular units of sounds differentiate it uniquely from each other. When we are trying to identify phonemes in a particular word it is best to break the word apart by sounding it out. We can often sound out words to find a solid stance to take on the word. These worksheets will help learn to sound out these pieces of sound.

Isolate and Pronounce Phonemes Worksheets To Print:

a Words – Find the short a words and brighten them up.

Word Puzzle – There are five words in this puzzle. Can you find all of them?

Your Place or Mine? – Sort the words by the presence of a short e.

On The Shelf – Find the presence of long and short vowels in given words.

Bean Bag Toss – You can actual sit this up as a bean bag toss game.

Word Search – Find the words in the puzzle.

Sound Search – Circle the pictures with a short i (?).

"a" Words – Draw a line to match the picture with the word.

Puzzle Fun – Find the words in the puzzle. Then write each word on a line.

Ending Sounds – Say the letter at the beginning of each row. Trace the letter. Then circle the picture that ends with the sound of the letter in each row.

Beginning Sounds – Say the name of each picture out loud. What sound does it start with? Circle the letter. Then write the letter on the lines.

Middle Sounds – Say the name of each picture. What sound is in the middle? Circle the correct letter.

Short "o" Words – Find each word in the puzzle. Then write each word on the line.

HOW TO LEARN TO ISOLATE AND PRONOUNCE A PHONEME

What is a phoneme?


In the English language, a phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in the speech that differentiates one word from another. A phoneme is a building block that helps the child to learn how to decode words. We often teach kindergarteners the sound of each letter and which letters represent those sounds, for example, the word 'cap' has three phonemes – 'c' 'a' and 'p'. In writing, linguistics insert slash marks to identify symbols of phonemes.


Phoneme Isolation


This refers to the identification of phonemes in words, where it materializes in a word and what sound appears in what position in a word. Learning to isolate phoneme is vital in general language development. A child who is proficient in phoneme isolation can tell the sound of each letter with regards to its placement in the word. Phoneme isolation falls into three categories:


Initial Sound Isolation- child is taught to isolate the first sound in a word for example:

Answer: /h/


Final Sound Isolation- that is the ender.

Medial Sound Isolation- What is the middle sound in 'hat'?


Answer: /a/


Children who do not have command over phoneme isolation can identify that 'hat' contains the /t/ sound, but they will be confused about where it stands in the word.


Phoneme Pronunciation


Children who identify the individual sounds in words, can pronounce the words using phonemes. Perfect phoneme pronunciation cannot be achieved without learning how to blend phoneme. Phoneme pronunciation can be taught by segmenting the phonemes such as with the word 'sand', the child can hear the sound /sss/, /aaa/, /nn/ and /d/ and if he has the concept he will pronounce the correct word 'sand'.
