Reading readiness is a measure of how close to being ready to learn read someone is. Once a person reaches an appropriate level they are declassified as a non-reader into a reader. There are usually a series of things that those with a good bit of readiness have in common. The students would first understand what print on paper is and have an understanding that there is a message in there. These students know there ABCs and can retell a story that they listened to. Students then are able to attribute specific sounds to the letters and letter groups of the alphabet.

Reading Readiness Worksheets To Print:

Complete It! - Read the words. Read each sentence. Fill in the blank with the correct word from the word box to complete each sentence.

Ready to Read! - What word finishes it off right? There is a visual hint with each sentence and a word to help as well.

Picture Sentences - You will need to come up with the word yourself. They are hiding behind the pictures of them.

Which One is Right? - Circle the word to complete each sentence. Write it on the line. You will need to use basic logic to solve each of these blanks.

The Good, the Bad, and Turtles - Fill in the blank in each sentence. Use the pictures for clues. These are not all tangible vocabulary terms, which is good to see how students handle that at this level.

Where's Fill? - These are pretty recognizable symbols for this grade level. Reminding them of birthdays, is helpful too.

Ready to Read About Animals? - Say the name of the animal in each picture out loud. Write the name on the line.

Picture Clues - Use the pictures for clues. Kinda like the name implies. There is no word bank to work off of here.

How to Gauge a Kindergartners Reading Readiness?

In order to assess children when they reach a certain stage like pre-school or kindergarten, teachers use a test called the reading readiness test. This is employed to gauge if these children are ready to learn how to read.


Typically, teachers want to analyze if their students have the prerequisites that are mandatory to begin learning how to read. In some cases, these examinations are used to gauge if a particular child is having difficulty in pre-reading activities.


The reading readiness test is also imperative because it allows teachers to re-evaluate their methods of teaching. If a student is not ready yet, teachers can focus on other aspects instead and prepare them for being better prepared.


Since readers should be able to distinguish between letters to read, the test is beneficial as it helps children recognize upper and lower case letters too. Taking the test may also allow teachers to display letters and then ask students to assess the sound made by each letter. In addition, they may also be asked to recognize the initial sounds made by the individual words.


Reading readiness tests also evaluate the child's skills of auditory discrimination. This is an essential component in their language skill set because children must be able to analyze the difference between individual sounds.


For instance, a common sub-test included in the examination is to ask kids to assess rhyming words. They are provided a series of pictures and the invigilator only names the first illustration, and all the subsequent ones. After this, the students are asked to select the drawing of the term that rhymes with the first one. There are also certain examinations that evaluate whether children can rhyme words by themselves.
