Expanded Reading Worksheets

We look at very unique aspects of bodies of work. This is the section where you find those knowledge nuggets you were looking for. The unique goal of this section is to advance the process of thought through the works that you are reading. The overall touchdown is to find the breaking point of the author. What was their purpose for writing this? Was it written in the outmost forthright fashion that we could decipher? Was the objective of the work reached? Would you write it that way again? Expanded reading is a whole new level that requires you to read the pre-thoughts of the intended audience.

How to Read Critically

When you approach reading in a critical manner you are not looking for flaws or falsehoods in what you are taking in. You are just approaching the work from a different standpoint than being a typical observer of the passage. You are asking yourself, “What is the author's motivation? Why did they write this piece? What is the outcome that they are working towards achieving?” You are looking at everything in a positive light, but driven point.

Take notes during the reading of the text. Find the major points of the work. The last piece of business is to focus the energy towards the author. Reflect on why you were compelled to read this. Was it for the purpose of making your point or the authors point?

You need to focus on the author's argument and viewpoint when the goal is to take in the work as a whole. You want to connect what has been written with the ultimate audience of the work. Did the author complete the goal of the work? Were you moved by the words that the author used in the description of the terms that were presented? Was the reader forced to interact with the work? Is it quick and easy to locate the primary and secondary features of each work?
